World sketching

Build the world before polishing the image. Each stage should answer one question and leave enough openness for the next stage to transform it.

I am learning visual art through making worlds rather than through isolated exercises. A sketch can begin as turbulence, terrain, a lighting field, a creature symmetry, a material behavior, or a fragment of atmosphere. The goal is not to finish immediately. It is to discover what the image wants to become.

One stage, one question

Each medium can carry a different kind of thinking. Drawing establishes gesture and form. Procedural tools explore variation and structure. 3D gives spatial consequence. Painting and compositing shape atmosphere, hierarchy, and final perception.

Do not finish before moving on.

This prevents every tool from becoming a place where the whole image has to be solved. The sketch can stay loose enough to mutate while still becoming progressively more specific.

Creation before curriculum

The learning loop begins with an artifact. A project exposes the missing skill, then the skill is practiced in context. Perspective matters because a street scene breaks. Form matters because a creature collapses. Lighting matters because the world has no depth.

The curriculum therefore grows out of the work: encounter, exploration, craft, transmission. The image is both the result and the teacher.
